Tourism development and destination planning is essential for destinations to ensure sustainability.  Economic, environmental, and social benefits are important but just as critical is the identification of a destinations carrying capacity to ensure that it does not succumb to over tourism.  We’ll walk through the site to scope the development and discuss our recommendations with you.  We’ll then draft the tourism development concept and destination plan, manage the project and hand over the finalized project.

Thalanyji Tourism Empowerment Strategy

The Determination Area of the Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC) is located in the Shire of Onslow in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. We were engaged to develop a tourism strategy to help guide decision making around the State Government’s native title settlement process. An engagement strategy was developed incorporating key members from the Traditional Owner group as the Working Group to support the development of the strategy. Two visits to the determination area/country were completed to assess opportunity on land, as well as capacity and capability of members. Economic Transitions was also included in the state government negotiations with BTAC incorporating key government departments assisting in the development of their compensation package.

WA Hot Springs Business Development Opportunity Analysis

Economic Transitions worked with our project partners Creative Spaces, Executive Compass and Wanderlust Communications to develop a tourism business opportunity analysis for Western Australian hot springs. The project assessed and analysed the existing hot springs offerings, identified business opportunities and development requirements contributing to increased visitation, identified viable and permissible development sites for new hot springs product that can feasibly be incorporated into a branded WA hot springs experience including preliminary construction costs and 10 year operating budget. It also provided a range of potential marketing options for a branded WA hot springs experience that incorporates existing and new hot springs product.

Northern Growth Alliance

Northern Growth Alliance Tourism Strategy

Funded by the Wheatbelt Development Commission, and incorporating the Shires of Chittering, Dandaragan and Gingin we were engaged to develop a tourism strategy to diversify tourism product and increase economic benefit and tourism numbers to the Shires, review economic benefit, tourism asset and product audit, review marketing and branding, complete a tourism gap analysis and determine potential project development.  The project methodology included community consultation through workshops and focus groups, stakeholder engagement across the three Shires, extensive site visitation, and desktop analysis of key documentation. The final report included short-, medium- and long-term projects for each of the Shires, as well as potential collaborative Alliance projects.

Development of a Tourism Strategy for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder

Together with our project partners Flametree Creative and Wanderlust Communications, we were appointed by LandCorp as part of the Regional Growth Plan Project for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to develop a tourism, marketing, and branding strategy for Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Key stakeholder engagement was conducted, as well as community workshops, desktop research in to the current and potential tourist markets, development, piloting, and administering a survey, and data analysis. strategy was delivered for tourism growth and opportunities to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Golden Quest Guidebook

Golden Quest Discovery Trail Continuous Improvement Project

Goldfields Tourism Network Association Inc.

The preliminary component for this project was the successful submission for federal TIRF funding for the Golden Quest Discovery Trail.  Once funding had been secured, we project managed the upgrade of the Trail through the Goldfields of Western Australia encompassing five regional Shires, guidebook edits and redesign, signage upgrade, conducted key stakeholder consultation, website design and script content, and brochure design and content.

We were engaged to develop a long-term strategic tourism plan which would complement the 10-year Strategic Community Masterplan for the Shire. The project incorporated stakeholder engagement, community consultation and workshops.

Tourist Mine Project Plan 2021

Hannans North Tourist Mine – Northern Star Resources

Funded by Northern Star Resources as the owning company of Hannans North Tourist Mine, we were engaged to develop a broad scope site project plan to enhance, maintain and refurbish the tourist site, Main Building, gardens, and historic buildings. The final report included individual project cost estimates based on quotes, and cost analysis for each.

We were engaged by RDA Wheatbelt to assist in the development and formation of the enterprise, Wander the Wheatbelt.  We worked with the key stakeholders to develop their Strategic Plan, Tourism Business Plan, and digital platform mock-up.

Tourism Marketing Strategy

We were engaged to review and rewrite the Shire’s Tourism Marketing Strategy. We worked with the Shire’s Economic Development Officer to assess their traditional and digital marketing strategies and provide advice on potential future strategies.  The Shire subsequently developed their Economic Development Strategy internally and incorporated the finalisation of the Marketing Strategy.

Francois Peron Heritage Precinct Tourism Business Opportunity Analysis 

With our project partners Creative Spaces and Executive Compass, we developed a tourism business opportunity analysis for the Francois Peron Heritage Precinct in the Shire of Shark Bay for Tourism WA and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.  The project objective was to identify viable and permissible business opportunities and development requirements by engaging with the   Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Malgana Aboriginal Corporation, Gascoyne Development Commission, Destination Shark Bay Working Group and Tourism WA. We developed a mixed methods approach incorporating a workshop with key stakeholders in the Shire of Shark Bay, developed a staged   approach masterplan concept for development with construction costs, and 10-year operating budget.

Geo-trail and geocaching

Development of Geo-trail and Geocaching Sites

Engaged by the Shire of Leonora and supported by the Department of Mines and Petroleum, Geological Survey, we developed geotrail sites on the existing Leonora Loop Trails, and geocaching sites, to further enhance the tourist experience and economic contribution of tourists in the Shire. Extensive site research was conducted to ensure vehicle and telecommunication accessibility for tourists, relevant information to the site, and complementary sites to the existing Darlot and Agnew Loop Trails.
